Physical and chemical properties：

Nonylphenol (NP) is a viscous light yellow liquid with a slight phenol smell. It is a mixture of three isomers with a relative density of 0.94 to 0.95. Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in petroleum ether, soluble in ethanol, acetone, benzene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, also soluble in aniline and heptane, insoluble in dilute sodium hydroxide solution.

Preparation method: 

Using phenol as raw material, it can be prepared by alkylation reaction with nonene under the action of acidic catalyst. Nonene is usually produced from propylene trimer. The acidic catalyst is composed of phosphoric acid/diatomaceous earth or phosphoric acid/silica, and boron trifluoride can also be used. Nonylphenol can be produced by reacting phenol and trimerized propylene at 70°C and then entering the second reactor at 100°C to continue the reaction.

Chemical Properties:

Light yellow liquid. Relative density (20/4℃) 0.950, boiling point 293-297℃. Soluble in benzene and alcohol, insoluble in water.
